"Our home is truly a reflection of who we are"

“M&H designs more than beautiful spaces. We are style diviners and family soothsayers, working closely with our clients as a team to create considered environments that elevate the everyday and inspire people to connect.”

Our best work happens when we collaborate directly with our clients and bring them into the process of telling their story through their space. Every project is unique because every client is unique. We don’t impose a house style; we want to get to know you and your lifestyle, and interpret this into a space that enables the experiences you desire.

Explore our Process

Working as a team requires balance, which comes to life in the spaces we design. Old/new, soft/hard, masculine/feminine, open/ intimate, positive/negative – through these tensions we find balance between function and beauty for each space.

About

Hillary Kaplan and Miriam Silver Verga are all about finding the perfect balance in design. After careers in fashion design and interior design publishing they started M&H Design in 2011 to create authentic, unique spaces that speak to their clients’ individuality. Their approach as partners balances a room with carefully collected vintage pieces, custom items made for your living space by skilled artisans and affordable accessible items purposefully curated to re ect the homeowner’s style.

M&H believe that a home should reflect the diverse individuality that every family has, without comprising cohesion or elegance. It should tell a story—your story—and M&H pride themselves on uncovering the perfect details to create a space expressive of you and your family.

Every surface will be classic and at the same time current. Intimate meetings will function equally as well as raucous parties. The color palette will be clean but rich. Cool colors will adore the balance of their warm counterparts. It will be full of personality but not full of clutter. Stylistically it will be a juxtaposition of modern lines with warm and timeless elements. Most importantly, it will be a reflection of your best self.

FAQs

How long does the design process take?

Typically we take about a month from our first visit to show you our design. After we agree on the design, the speed is based on availability of the product, speed of payment, and our contractors scheduling.

If I have a question, how long will it take for you to get back to me?

Someone from our team will get back to you within 2 business days.

Will my house look like a magazine at the end?

You better believe it! You will want to throw a party the day of install. And we would love to be invited. Part of our final service is styling the space. We bring a load of curated accessories and play with them until it’s perfect. You get to keep the pieces you love and we’ll take the ones that aren’t quite right!

I work and I can’t be home for install or deliveries

That’s what makes us full service! Our project manager checks with you to see if you can be home for delivery, if you can’t, she’ll be there to accept delivery and ensure the right products come off the truck. She’ll even pet the dog while she’s there.

Why is it taking so long for delivery of my item(s)?

Although our project manager makes it her job to know where your products are and how long they’ll take for delivery, we’re sometimes at the mercy of our vendors. But you’ll always know what we know, when we know it. That’s a promise.

Do you know a good painter, wallpaper hanger, tile guys, electrician, etc.?

That’s exactly who we know. We know the best, most reliable, and kindest trades people out there and maintain great relationships with them. We’re happy to connect our customers to our network. That’s what you pay for!

What if something you included on my board goes on sale?

With custom ordered pieces, the price rarely changes. However, when we order from catalogue companies it gets a bit trickier. Some companies, like Williams & Sonoma, make sales easy to include in our trade pricing. With other companies the sale pricing may not be reflected in our trade pricing (Restoration Hardware is particularly difficult with this practice).

While this may seem frustrating for you, transparently marking up our product is how our business works. The benefit is that we deal with making the orders, shipping, receiving and installing.

What if I can’t justify spending that much on a rug?

We go into a project with very frank discussions about budget, but if there is something you just can’t pull the trigger on price- wise we’re happy to look for less expensive alternatives. Because we bill hourly, we’ll decide together if the savings is worth it. If you’re not in a hurry, we can spend some time trolling the sales and showrooms we visit for a better alternative.

I’m in a rush and I needed everything yesterday.

We operate within a Venn diagram that includes; speed, quality and cost. Our job is to figure out where your project fits within those circles. Speeding things up can sometimes mean higher prices or reduced quality. But we’ll work with you to make those decisions as they arise. Some clients prefer to hire us on a retainer that we can dip into when we place orders (once the order has been approved by you, of course!). This can help speed up the process.

Client Experience

Most of our clients had never worked with an interior design team before. So we asked them to describe their experience, hoping to help you get a feel for what we do best and how the process works.

What will I get out of working with an interior designer?

“Working with a designer elevates the outcome. The best part was the consistency, congruency and cohesiveness of the entire project, which I couldn’t have achieved on my own.”

How do M&H relate to their clients?

“Clients are valued as unique individuals. They (m&h) work hard to understand who they’re working for which allows for openness, interpretation and creativity in ways that aren’t replicable…. They could read me; they brought forth my ideas and kept iterating to ‘get me’. They’re not defensive and we worked together, sometimes they pushed back and I appreciated that. But no was no; I was respected and not coddled.”

How do Miriam and Hillary work together?

“They are complimentary designers that balance each other, from the big picture to the details – I was included in their interplay and dialogue, which felt collaborative. There’s a magic between them and how they play off each others ideas to come up with brilliant ideas.”

What’s my part in the process?

“We had a real exchange about the ideas and then they presented the design board with options – I felt like I was a real part of it. They gave me a clear path with so many visual cues that I could make choices and get behind the ideas.”

What part of the process do they take care of?

“They included me by bringing me to a showroom to see pieces they picked out for me – and other things they didn’t include me on – like picking out 7000 fabric swatches! I felt calm and relieved knowing someone else was thinking about my house at 3am, so I didn’t have to.”

What don’t they do?

“I realized interior designers are not personal shoppers. They’re artists who tell the story of your family through the medium of your home. First I had to learn to trust them and give them the freedom they needed to do the design work, then when I was hooked, I had to reign in my asks to the rooms in the contract!”

What if something goes wrong?

“Miriam and Hillary are willing to take ownership of faults to improve the experience of the customer. Their professionalism and that of those they work with is nothing short of remarkable.”
