Basements

basement, finished basement

As summer ends, we are looking to our basements again to keep us occupied these winter months. Designing basements in new homes vs older homes can be quite different. We have had clients dig out basements and underpinned older homes to get the height requirements needed. While this is expensive, it gives older homes a new lease on life, in the basement space. New homes suffer from being blank spaces, without obvious zones. Either way, deciding how you want the space used instantly creates zones which helps with space planning.

Adding a bar area can be great for a space that’s going to be shared with adults. We added a bar with glass enclosures to keep the minimal basement light as effective as possible. A wine area can be achieved with drop in wine fridges made to look custom, with a sweet tasting spot nearby.

Adding architectural features will make a dry wall space more interesting and seem connected to the main area. A fireplace can make a basement the perfect place to curl up in the winter months.

A snack zone is essential in a basement. We added one under stairs to get the space needed so the children would stay downstairs as long as possible. The minimum would be a small fridge, pull out garbage and some storage however adding a sink is ideal.

An oversized sectional is the final touch needed for a perfect lounging spot. If stairs are tight, a modular sofa is the way to go with separate pieces.

Lastly, consider the windows. If possible, dig out window wells and put in large windows. Otherwise, consider built-in cabinets beneath them to act as a visual anchor, making their high placement seem just right; they gain substance and polish from crisp trim, deep sills, and bronze latch closures.
