Transforming a 1960s Mock Colonial: A Modern Poolside Renovation

Photos by: Toni Deis Creative

Renovating a 1960s mock colonial home is no small feat, especially when the goal is to create a sleek, modern design that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor living spaces. In this recent project, we embraced contemporary design elements inspired by Australian architecture while completely reimagining the layout to fit the family’s lifestyle—all without the need for an external architect. Here’s how we transformed this poolside area into a functional, modern haven.

Reworking the Layout for Functionality

One of the biggest changes was reconfiguring the layout. We relocated the laundry room and flipped the bathroom to maximize the space, extending the living room into the garage area. The new layout improved both functionality and flow, allowing us to create distinct zones within the home that work together harmoniously. By handling the redesign in-house, we had complete control over the vision, resulting in a cohesive space tailored to the family's needs.

Prioritizing a Spacious Kitchen and Island

Instead of a traditional dining table, we opted for a larger kitchen island—ideal for this family, where the kitchen serves as the heart of the home. A spacious island not only offers more prep space but also becomes a natural gathering spot for family and friends. This modern kitchen, with its clean lines and practical storage solutions, reflects a fresh approach to living.

A Seamless Connection to the Outdoors

One of the most impactful updates was replacing a small greenhouse window with a large, stunning window that opens up to beautiful poolside views. This change not only flooded the space with natural light but also created a stronger connection between the indoors and outdoors, enhancing the home's overall appeal.

Modern Design Inspired by Australian Architecture

This home’s design was heavily influenced by the sleek, minimalist aesthetic of modern Australian architecture. We weren’t bound by historical accuracy, as the home was not a historic property. Instead, we focused on creating a calming, modern environment with an emphasis on clean lines and moody tones that reflect the family's contemporary taste.

Functional Design Features Throughout

Every detail of this renovation was thoughtfully considered to enhance both form and function. From adding custom storage solutions to maximizing every inch of kitchen space, the home was designed with practicality in mind. The larger island, ample cabinetry, and reimagined flow ensure the space is not only beautiful but also highly functional for everyday living.

This poolside renovation of a 1960s mock colonial home successfully blends modern design with functionality. By reworking the layout, prioritizing a spacious kitchen, and drawing inspiration from Australian architecture, we created a stunning and practical space that perfectly suits the family’s needs. This transformation shows how thoughtful design can turn any home into a modern masterpiece.
